Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP)

A KTP is a three-way partnership between a business, Abertay University and a recently qualified graduate, known as the Associate. It offers a business the chance to collaborate on a commercial opportunity, idea or innovation. Innovate UK part-fund the cost of the project, including the KTP Associate, who helps the business gain the knowledge and capability it needs to innovate and grow. The business gets to choose the graduate (the Associate) but they are employed by the University and are supported by an academic.  Partnerships can last from six months to three years.  However, although part-funded there is still a cost to the business. The annual cost of a KTP is on average about £60k, BUT:

  • A small or medium-sized business will contribute around a third of total project costs, £22k on average
  • A larger company is responsible for about half of total project costs, or £35k on average

Food Innovation @ Abertay (FIA) currently supports a number of KTP Associates based within food and drink businesses but would welcome more as Abertay academics benefit too from the partnership
